Life in the City Gardens Neighbourhood: May April 21, 2023

Spring is bringing fresh, new businesses to the City Gardens neighbourhood. Discover more reasons to love living in the downtown core.

Le Burger Cafe at 340 Victoria Street distinguishes itself from all other local offerings by remaining open into the wee hours of the morning. Satisfy those late-night cravings from 11 am – 3 am Monday through Friday and Sunday and from 6 pm – 3 am on Saturdays. Build your own burger or explore their monthly specials, like the parmesan garlic butter burger. Their 100% Canadian beef patties are made at the time of order. Try a vanilla, strawberry, chocolate Oreo or Bollywood coffee milkshake to satisfy your sweet tooth.

It is a treat to explore Nutters Kamloops at 440 Seymour Street. Their well-organized aisles are stocked with keto, dairy-free, gluten-free, and other specialty foods, organic produce, clean beauty products, natural body care and vitamins and supplements. Take advantage of “Power Tuesday,” the first Tuesday of the month, when they offer 20% off vitamins and supplements and 15% off everything else. If you are looking for some culinary inspiration, visit their recipe page. Nutters is open from 9 am to 7 pm Monday – Friday, 9 am to 6 pm on Saturday and 10 am – 6 pm on Sunday.

Opening in March, The Chook Eatery at 151 Victoria Street is the brainchild of Nicole and Barry, the owners of Kamloops’ well-loved and oft-heralded Peter’s Pasta. While Peter’s Pasta is a legacy business, The Chook is a project that Barry started dreaming of at 13, which harmoniously fulfilled Nicole’s dream of designing a restaurant from scratch. Every Wednesday to Sunday from 9 am – 2 pm, they bring their expertise to the brunch arena offering an alluring menu that includes Lamb Shakshuka with a nice glass of Sopresa, breakfast tacos, skillet bennies and apple crumble waffles. Gluten-free options are available upon request. Nicole satisfies our curiosity about the name, explaining that “chook” means chicken in Australia. “We are so grateful for the support of our family, friends, customers and especially our staff, who helped make this dream happen.”

Another recently opened business is Lys’s Thrift and Vintage Hommes. Located three doors up from Lys’s Thrift and Vintage at 234 Victoria Street, the men’s shop is open daily from 10 am – 6 pm. Check out their selection of FOG sweatpants, Carhartt, and 90s Levi’s. With daily restocks, there is always something new to see.
