Back in December of 2021, the “little pink house” located at 430 Nicola Street was picked up and moved to a homestead in the rural community of McLure, 35 minutes down the Yellowhead Highway from Kamloops. At the time, Owen and Shannon were working on plans to build on their property, but those plans fell through, and the “little pink house” became their Plan C, right in the nick of time.
“We feel so blessed to have come across this house at the time we did,” shared Owen. “There were a lot of challenges we were facing in terms of permits and timing. With all that happened with COVID, supply chain issues were making some of the options we were looking at unrealistic in terms of cost and timing. We heard about Kelson Group moving some of these character homes with Nickel Bros. House Moving. We inquired, and it all worked out perfectly for our family.”
Owen, Shannon, and their family are so pleased to call the ‘little pink house’ their home and have loved living in the home since fall of 2022.
“One of the significant changes we did was paint the exterior,” said Owen. “Although the pink was in fact growing on me, in the end, we opted for a colour called ‘Willow Mist’ from a heritage-style palate of colours, with a great cream trim. We’ve also redone the roof to the same dimensions as the original and installed a metal roof which is more resistant to wildfire, and we’re rebuilding the deck. Since the house was transported without the roof, we sought to keep a lot of the signature Craftsman style features of the original house when it was in Kamloops on Nicola Street, and we think it has turned out great!”
One of the most important aspects for the family was that the house would feel like home, something that happened instantaneously.
“Our favourite thing about the house is that it feels like home,” remarked Owen. “It had been lived in for many decades and had that comfortable, lived-in feeling the moment we moved in. That has been one of the best things for our growing family.”
With the house close to where Owen and Shannon want it to be, the family is now focusing their attention on their property and enjoy the peacefulness of living in a more rural part of the province.
“We’re so thankful to have been a part of this City Gardens story in a different way by purchasing and repurposing one of the old homes and moving it to our property,” shared Owen. “It’s been ideal for our growing family in a place we love.”
